12 June 2021
This year’s Eagle chic is reported to have hatched +- 5 June 2021. I was away for the weekend to celebrate another birthday, and I could not wait to get to the Gardens the next weekend to see if I could spot the little one. I saw him through the binoculars when he briefly lifted his little head. Mom Makatsa stayed close and kept a watchful eye. She also gave dad Mahlori a stern warning when he approached the nest to fast.
18 July 2021
I was only able to return 5 weeks later. I was amazed at how big our little one had gotten. I was delighted to watch as mom gave him his breakfast and then proceeded to finish the leftovers herself.
It was wonderful to see the adults soar above my head.
August 2021
I visited on 1 August and expected to still see a little white eagle. Great was my surprise when I saw this brown youngster. I was completely amazed how much she had changed since my last visit!
I visited again 3 weeks later. The weather was not great and there was very little action. But is was great to see how she was growing.
September 2021
There was an expectation that your youngster would fledge in early September. On 4 September I arrived with high hopes. The adults were still feeding her on the nest however, so I knew she would not fledge that day. It was wonderful to see her stretch her wings.
There was also some action from the adults.
There was no fledging that day, and I hoped she would wait until the next weekend when I could go visit again!
On 12 September 2021 it finally happened – she took a very short flight to a branch next to the nest. I caught the action as she returned to the nest.
October 2021
My next visit was only in mid-October 2021. During the week before my visit, she was finally given a name. Amari (possesses great strength). I thought it was a very cool name.
As I was walking to the top of the waterfall I saw her disappear over the ridge. I decided to walk around in the Gardens and when I reached the bottom of the waterfall she re-appeared. She stayed high, but it was fabulous to see her fly confidently.
November 2021
by November she had increased in confidence. She had also been given a name.
Amari.
Who possesses great strength.
She doesn’t always fly close to the spot at the top of the waterfall. But when she does, it is spectacular.
The adults also gave us some wonderful displays. Beautiful mom Makatsa.
