I saw many of my favourite animal, but not once did I see the large herds I’ve previously encountered, especially in the Satara area. A few kilometres after entering at the Orpen Gate I saw my first elephant – a large one.
When I arrived at Satara I had a look to see if there was any activity at the webcam and found another elephant. This photo was taken from the fence – you can see just how dense the bush was – you could not even see the waterhole! The view of the Olifants River from the camp must be one of the best in Kruger. When I arrived on the Friday, the view was even more spectacular as there was a herd of elephants in the middle of the river.
During one of my regular stops on the Letaba river a large herd was crossing the river. The herd also included a couple of little ones.
Shortly after arriving at Letaba I saw this large bull. He was relaxing in the shade of a tree and then went down to the river for a drink.
One afternoon on the way back to camp there was another herd on the other side of the Letaba river. It was such a beautiful scene. Even if they are not close, the peacefulness of the moment creates one of those perfect Kruger moments that stay with you for a long time.
I stopped at the Malopenyana waterhole on two occasions. There were always elephants having a drink.
On my last morning I made a quick stop at the Nhlanganini Dam. I was just about to leave when some elephants arrived. So, I stayed a little longer.
My last elephant encounter of the trip was at Sable Dam. There were 2 elephants on the far side, and this large bull across from the hide.
