3 February 2021

I thought the best thing to do on my birthday was visit my happy place. It would be my first visit this year and almost did not happen due to the weather. But luckily the weather held and I was able to go for a quick visit.

A beautiful Red-winged Starling greeted me at the gate.Red-winged Starling Red-winged Starling

I loved this little Amethyst Sunbird.Amethyst Sunbird

I didn‘t think I would see the Eagles, but I was thrilled to see Makatsa and Mahlori. One of them was bringing nesting material to the nest.Verreauxs Eagle

I also took time to look for bugs and things. I found a few grasshoppers.grasshopper grasshopper

I only spent about 2 hours in the Garden, but it was so great to be back and I thoroughly enjoyed every second.

I visited the gardens again just before the end of February. The Eagles were nowhere to be seen.  I did however get a lovely surprise when the Peregrine Falcon showed up to hunt some swifts. Rumor has it that Peregrine falcons are the fastest hunting birds, and that was obvious. It was really difficult to get a photo of this fast moving little bird. How the swifts managed not to get caught is beyond comprehension.Peregrine Falcon

On the way down from the waterfall I turned a few rocks and found a few scorpions. This was the highlight though – a mom with some cute babies on her back.Scorpion_Babies

Another rock yielded something unexpected – a Solifuge.Solifuge

I also found a cute spider in its tunnel web and a very colourful fly.
