During the week after the new male arrived, there were a few reports that Makatsa was still feeding the chick and that the male was still around. I could not wait to go and have a look again!
If the arial display the previous Sunday was spectacular, this one was even more breathtaking. There were moments where I did not even try and take photos, I literally just stood there with my mouth open, impressed beyond words.
I thought I saw three birds on the nest as I walked up to the waterfall, but I wasn’t sure. Makatsa visited the nest a few times and even brought nesting material to the nest.
The male Eagle was flying about with some sticks, and once or twice landed close to the nest. Then finally, he joined her on the nest! But she quickly chased him away again.
But he did not let that discourage him, and soon he had more nesting material.
Makatsa and her little bundle watched it all with great interest.
It was very entertaining to watch the Eagles and the crows interacting. There were moments where I thought (and hoped!) that the Eagles would catch one of the crows!
Soon Makatsa joined the chase again.
When they fly overhead, so close I feel like I could almost touch them, it literally takes my breath away.
Even from a distance it is obvious how much the little Eagle has grown in one week.
Every now and then mom would land on the nest.
The male eagle is a very handsome bird.
And then the moment I had been waiting for – all three birds on the nest!
It was honestly the best moment ever. I had to wonder if it has ever happened where a Verreaux’s Eagle male “adopted” another male’s offspring. This had to be a first!
I also wondered if this beautiful Eagle had any idea of the excitement his short life has already caused.
I left the waterfall absolutely thrilled with what I had seen this morning. It was one of the best Eagle displays I had seen in a long time!
