Mata Mata camp is absolutely fantastic. Because it is a small camp it is quiet. The communal facilities are as good as those in Nossob.
This is the closest I have even been to Namibia!
I set up my tent and then spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing. I went to sit in the hide for a while. A Karrasburg Tree Skink was basking in the afternoon sun.
I added a new trip bird to my list in the form of a Green-winged Pytilia. A Familiar Chat posed nicely.
I went for a walk around camp and found another White-faced Owl.
A Pair of White-browed Sparrow-weavers looked adorable sitting together with their nesting material.
There was a family of meerkats living in camp, and they would provide lots and lots of entertainment for the duration of my stay.
There were a few youngsters as well, and I just loved watching their antics.
One of the adults came for a drink at the tap next to my tent.
A Yellow Mongoose was also quite comfortable with my presence.
When the sun started setting I went to the hide again. The Cape Turtle Doves came for a drink. The golden light was perfect.
The sounds while I was having my braai were fantastic.
The next day I spent most of the middle of the day in camp. I tried reading, but the locals made it impossible.
When the Cape Starlings were not pooping on my head, they came to inspect my water bottle.
I also spotted a cute little Pririt Batis that posed nicely for a change.
I was able to take a few macro photos of the Meercats. I think they are very cute, but my son calls this “the face of a killer” (due to a very bad experience with one when he was just a boy).
The kids were having another wrestling match.
Every time the White-backed Vultures flew overhead, the lookout would stare up into the sky to ensure it is not something that would come and hunt the little ones.
The Ground Squirrels also came for a drink.
I loved the orange eyes of the Yellow Mongoose.
Mata Mata is such a wonderful camp. I loved staying there. But as I looked at the Park map at reception when I was checking in, I decided to shorten my stay. I was supposed to camp for three nights before moving to Twee Rivieren for my last night in the Park. But I decided to shorten my stay to two nights and rather stay an extra night at Twee Rivieren to allow me time to explore the area around Twee Rivieren a little more.
And now I have a reason to come back and really enjoy this gem of a camp!
