There was quite a long queue at the entrance gate to West Coast National Park when I arrived. I finally entered the Park and stopped as the first hide. It was a very low low tide, and there were not many birds.
The flowers were extremely pretty though.
On the way back to the car I saw a Booted Eagle high in the sky.
The weather was strange – warm and sunny one minute, and cold and overcast the next. The one thing that was constant was the wind. Despite the wind there were a few little birds around.
I had to stop for the gorgeous views.
I stopped at the Geelbek Visitor’s center and visited both hides. There were many Greater Flamingos near the hides.
I few Lesser Flamingos flew past as I walked to the car – one only had one foot.
I was very excited to visit the Postberg section of the Park, an area that is only open to the public during flower season each year. I loved these lavender flowers on the white dunes.
On the way a Black Harrier flew up from the fynbos and provided me with my best Black Harrier sighting ever. What a gorgeous bird!
As I drove through the gates of the Postberg section, my jaw dropped.
I thought I had seen stunning flowers during the last few days, but these flowers took things to a different level all together. The landscape looked like one giant, colourful carpet.
I stopped every few meters to try and take it all in. More than once I had to wipe away tears of absolute wonder and incredulousness.
I did not have enough time to drive the entire loop, but I saw enough, and the scenery was indelibly imprinted in my mind.
The Francolins, Mountain Zebras and Ostriches in the flower carpets just added to the beauty.
Time was not on my side, and I was not able to explore the entire Postberg section. Reluctantly I turned around. I savored every second of the magnificence of the flowers. I tried to limit the photos, but with such beauty ….. impossible.
Before heading to the Park Gate, I stopped at a little beach just outside the Postberg Section Gate. The photos speak for themselves. These scenes brought tears to my eyes. I was completely speechless.
I saw this Jackal Buzzard as I drove away from the beach.
A little further I saw the Black Harrier again.
My last sightings were of a Karoo Prinia and a Cape Bulbul.
As I drove to the Park Gate, I reflected on the day. Never in my wildest dreams could I have thought I’d see such beauty.
The weather turned again and it started raining just as I left the Park. That derailed my plans for a sunset dinner at Blouberg Strand. Instead I had a lovely dinner with two of my friends near my one friend’s house. The three of us had a wonderful visit. It was a lovely way to end a day that will stay in my memories forever.
